Jesus amazed his listeners in explaining deep spiritual truths by using common life situation and things around Him to illustrate a point: sheep, goats, coins, candles, salt, cities, sand, grain, wine, water, bread, family relationships, farming, fishing, storms, birth, death and a multitude of other metaphors. Life Lessons from Chess is an attempt to follow His model.

32. The King's Duel Purpose

Key Bible Verse: The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Obviously, in the game of chess, the king is the most significant piece. At the end of the game, if your king remains standing, you are victorious. There is also a second purpose for the king, especially during the end game. That is when he moves down the board to realize his offensive power; where he participates just as his fellow pieces have. Here is an example of the White king in play. It is White’s move. How can victory be secured?

I love the fact that God the Son, who is known as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords functioned in two ways. Not only as the King of our lives, but, also he was one who came down to earth and lived among us; who felt as we feel; who was tempted as we are tempted; who experienced what it is like for us to live on earth. When we pray to him we can be confident that he fully understands where we are coming from. What a wonderful mystery to know that God the Son, while on earth, was 100% God and 100% man. Amazing!

My response: Lord, I am overwhelmingly grateful for your willingness to empty yourself of your glory in heaven and experience humanity for me.

Thought to Apply: Today I will keep in mind that the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ are totally united. I rejoice in the fact that he is truly God, and truly man.
